DJ & MUSIC PRODUCTION @ WASHINGTON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

MORE THAN JUST THE MUSIC

Research has found that learning music facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children inevitably use in other areas. “A music-rich experience for children of singing, listening and moving is really bringing a very serious benefit to children as they progress into more formal learning,” says Mary Luehrisen, executive director of the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation, a not-for-profit association that promotes the benefits of making music. - PBS.org

AS EASY AS 1..2..3...

There are Three main components students learn from the program. Many of these components have applications in other fields as well.

1) Counting Beats!

Counting beats is a fundamental component of music. Some call it tempo or are more familiar with time signatures. In any case, it helps students understand rhythm and pace.

2)Thinking Outside of the Box!

When it comes to DJing and music production, there are no rules! What do we teach then? Instead of teaching a set of confined rules(the box), we teach students a skill set using various musical tools. Music is an expression of emotion and each individual is unique. We encourage students to let this be a platform for self expression.

3) Reading Your Audience!

A major part of performing live is being able to connect with your audience. To do so, you must attempt to read your crowd by trying new things, and taking risks. Understanding the impact music has on individuals is a skill that takes patience, but can have instant gratification. Combining the knowledge of the audience-performer relationship and understanding the affects of music will allow the performer to create a musical experience catered to any given audience.

AN INNOVATIVE MUSICAL OUTLET

Music is essential to children through adolescence. Unfortunately, it is overlooked more often by both the schools, via lack of funding, as well the students, via lack of interest. We are in a digital era in which music has also been vastly digitized. Playing instruments is still a very well respected art, though not something that always peaks a kids interest. DJing and Music Production allow the students to manipulate and create music they ENJOY. Not too mention, DJs/Music Producers are very popular in the music world right now and are idolized by the youth. Just as the rock bands in the 70s caused many to want to create their own bands. Music suddenly becomes "cool" again.

A FUN SKILL!

Djing and producing music is fun! This program provides a hands on experience unlike any other. In addition to having a class full of kids manipulating and remixing their favorite songs, they are learning a valued skill set. A skill set, just as plumbing or HVAC, that can go beyond being a hobby. Students will learn about the business side of DJing and Music Production and how they can realistic earn money doing so. I've known many of DJs that have paid their way through college working two nights a week ;)
